Four triangles, one timeless shape — and a quilt block with more than one name.

The Hourglass is a wonderfully simple geometric quilt block made from four triangles meeting at the centre. When contrasting fabrics are used, the pieces form the unmistakable shape of an hourglass — a design that is both striking and surprisingly versatile.

The pattern has a long history in patchwork. Research into early European and American patchwork has found hourglass-type geometric designs in objects from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, although researchers caution that Hourglass was not necessarily the historical name used by the makers themselves.

By the 19th century, the design was firmly part of the quiltmaking vocabulary, and surviving antique examples demonstrate how quilters used the simple four-triangle construction in a variety of colour combinations and layouts. A Smithsonian example of an Hourglass quilt describes the block as a “quarter-square triangle” design made from four triangular pieces.

Hourglass is one of those quilt names that can refer to more than one design!

That's because quilt blocks were traditionally passed from quilter to quilter rather than following a single standardized pattern book. The same name could therefore be used for different arrangements, while the same design could acquire completely different names.

One version of the four-triangle Hourglass has also been known as Big Dipper, Yankee Puzzle, Envelope Quilt, Whirling Blade, Bow Ties and Pork and Beans in different sources.

And here's another lovely bit of quilt history: Hourglass-type designs are particularly well suited to scrap quilting. Four contrasting triangles can turn even small pieces of leftover fabric into a strong geometric motif — making the block both economical and visually dramatic.

🧵 A Little Heritage

The Hourglass is a wonderful example of the ingenuity of traditional quiltmakers.

There is nothing complicated about its basic ingredients — just triangles and careful colour placement. Yet rotate those pieces, change the contrast or repeat the blocks across a quilt and completely different patterns begin to emerge.

That ability to create something visually complex from simple pieces is one of the great charms of traditional patchwork.
