Nine little squares. Centuries of quilting history.

The Nine Patch is one of the simplest quilt blocks to construct — nine fabric squares arranged in a three-by-three grid — yet it has remained one of the most beloved patterns in quiltmaking.

And this is not a pattern that only looks old. We have surviving examples that prove its early history.

The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History has a Nine Patch quilt from approximately 1790–1810, making it more than two centuries old. Another Smithsonian quilt, made around 1850–1875, is described as using the basic Nine Patch and calls it “one of the earliest pieced patterns which has retained its popularity.”

The Nine Patch didn't always look exactly the same.

Although we tend to picture nine equal squares today, historical examples show plenty of variations. Some have a larger centre square, while others use nine equal squares. Blocks could be set straight or on point, and quilters combined them with plain squares, sashing and other blocks to create completely different-looking quilts.

There are even surviving Nine Patch blocks dating from around 1800–1825 in the Smithsonian collection. These aren't simply modern reconstructions — they are actual pieces of early American quiltmaking history.
