Lily of the Valley is a traditional floral quilt design that was being recorded in American quilt collections by the early 1900s. The Spencer Museum of Art, for example, has a Lily of the Valley quilt block made by renowned quiltmaker and collector Carrie A. Hall, dating to the early 20th century.

The flower itself was a favourite source of inspiration for quiltmakers. In fact, Marie D. Webster's influential 1915 book Quilts lists Lily of the Valley among the recognised floral quilt patterns of the period.

 A Flower With Meaning

Lily of the Valley has delicate, bell-shaped flowers that hang beneath its leaves, making it particularly beautiful when translated into appliqué or pictorial quilting.

The flower has long been associated with sweetness, purity, renewal and the return of spring. Its delicate appearance also made it a natural choice for quilts celebrating flowers, gardens and the beauty of nature.

 A fascinating connection

Lily of the Valley wasn't limited to one particular quilting technique. Historical examples include appliquéd blocks, while later interpretations have used traditional piecing and other techniques.

There is even a documented Lily of the Valley block from the 1930 Kansas City Star "Memory Bouquet" series, one of 20 floral blocks published as a collection.
