Despite its glamorous name, the block's exact origins are somewhat mysterious. Similar designs appeared in American quilts and pattern publications during the 19th century, with names such as Crown of Thorns and Rocky Mountain Road also being used for related designs.
The pattern became especially popular in the 1930s and 1940s, when bold, high-contrast fabrics made its sunburst effect even more dramatic.
