Chapter 8 of our Halloween Night story ...

Not all who linger in the shadows are what they seem.

As twilight stretched its fingers across the crumbling ruins, a quiet rustle echoed beneath the web-laced stone arch. There, perched like a sentinel between blooming twilight flowers, sat a toad. But this was no ordinary creature of pond and puddle—his eyes held the shimmer of moonlight, and his skin glowed with the faintest iridescence of spellwork.

They called him Thistletoad—a keeper of secrets, and a guardian of potions too powerful to be left unwatched.

Bound beside him was a bottle wrapped in ribbon the color of burnt spells and dying leaves. Within it swirled a rare elixir said to grant clarity of vision… but only when the moon was at its thinnest, and the veil between the worlds at its weakest.

The spiders above him stirred, sensing what he already knew: Maelor’s return was no longer prophecy—it was a countdown.

Thistletoad’s throat pulsed once, twice… then he croaked a single word in an ancient tongue, and the flowers around him trembled as if they understood.

He was the signal. The watcher. And his silence had just been broken.

What had he seen? And more importantly—what had he warned?
