Description
A block full of twists and turns β and a name that hints at how tricky it can be.
The Devil's Puzzle is a pieced block of triangles arranged so that the pattern seems to turn and spin. As the blocks repeat, secondary shapes appear between them, keeping the eye moving around the quilt.
It is one of the many "puzzle" blocks of 19th-century quiltmaking, and versions were sold through mail-order pattern catalogues of the time. As usual in quilt history, the same name was sometimes given to quite different designs.
π Did You Know?
Many quilt names have a playful "devilish" side. Devil's Claws, Devil's Dark House and Devil's Puzzle all hint at a block that's a challenge to piece accurately, or at an optical trick that's hard to work out at first glance.
𧡠A Little Heritage
With its whirling movement and cheeky name, the Devil's Puzzle is a fun reminder of how much personality quilters gave their blocks.
We've captured this design as Volume 5, Stamp 7, giving you another little piece of quilt history to add to your Heritage Quilt Society collection.
