Descripción
Triangles in full sail — a block named after the most famous ghost ship of all.
The Flying Dutchman is built from flying-geese units arranged around the centre so that they seem to spin like a pinwheel. The result is a block full of movement, like sails catching the wind.
The name comes from the legend of the Flying Dutchman, a phantom ship doomed to sail the seas forever and never make port. The story was popular in 19th-century literature and on the stage, including Wagner's opera Der fliegende Holländer (1843).
⛵ Did You Know?
Seafaring names are a whole family in quilt history. Ocean Waves, Storm at Sea, Mariner's Compass and Ship's Wheel all came from coastal communities where the sea was part of daily life — and where many quilts were stitched while waiting for loved ones to come home.
🧵 A Little Heritage
A spinning block, a spooky legend and a nod to life by the sea.
We've captured this design as Volume 5, Stamp 10, giving you another little piece of quilt history to add to your Heritage Quilt Society collection.
