Descripción

One block, many names — and a remarkable record of American history.

Job's Tears is a curved pieced design that forms a chain of linked shapes across a quilt. Its name comes from the Biblical figure of Job and his sorrows, and is also the name of a plant whose tear-shaped seeds were once strung as beads.

What makes this pattern so remarkable is how often it was renamed. Quilt historian Ruth Finley recorded that the same design was known at different times as Slave Chain, Job's Tears, Texas Tears, Rocky Road to Kansas and Endless Chain. The changing names seem to follow the events and debates of the 19th century.

💧 Did You Know?

Quilt names were a way of talking about the news. At a time when women had little public voice, giving a block a name connected to the issues of the day was one way of joining the conversation.

🧵 A Little Heritage

Few blocks carry as much history in their names as Job's Tears. Stitching it is a small way of remembering the people who lived through those years.

We've captured this design as Volume 5, Stamp 8, giving you another little piece of quilt history to add to your Heritage Quilt Society collection.
