An old quilt pattern with a wonderfully descriptive name…

The Broken Dishes quilt block is made from four triangle units arranged into a simple four-patch. Turn those triangles in different directions and the pattern suddenly takes on the appearance of pieces of crockery scattered across the block.

Although the name Broken Dishes is familiar today, the design itself is considerably older. Quilt-history research traces this basic four-triangle arrangement back to the late 18th century, with examples of the design appearing in American quiltmaking traditions around the 1780s–1790s.

The interesting part is that the design is older than the name we commonly use for it today.

Quilt historian Barbara Brackman's research notes that the four-triangle unit has a long history and appeared under different names and arrangements. The name Broken Dishes became associated with the design much later, including its use by quilt designer and historian Ruby McKim when discussing quilt patterns in the 20th century.

And the pattern certainly didn't disappear. Museums have examples from different periods, including a Broken Dishes quilt from around 1920 in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Amish examples from the 20th century in the International Quilt Museum.

There is something particularly charming about Broken Dishes: it shows just how much a quilter can do with four simple triangle units.

Change the colours, rotate the pieces or alternate light and dark fabrics, and the same basic construction can produce dramatically different effects. That's one reason simple geometric blocks have remained so useful to generations of quiltmakers.
