The Wandering Foot is a fascinating American quilt pattern with a long history and several names. It is also known as Turkey Tracks, and historic examples show that the design was made in both appliqué and pieced versions.
One wonderful example in the International Quilt Museum dates from approximately 1850–1870 and is catalogued as Turkey Tracks, with Wandering Foot listed as its alternate pattern name. The museum records the quilt as probably made in Randolph County, Indiana.
The pattern was also documented by renowned quilt historian and collector Carrie A. Hall, whose early-20th-century collection includes a block specifically identified as “Wandering Foot quilt block, or Turkey Tracks quilt block.”
👣 But why “Wandering Foot”?
This is where quilt history gets especially intriguing!
A long-standing quilt tradition says that the pattern was originally called Wandering Foot because of a superstition that a person sleeping beneath the quilt might develop a desire to wander away from home. At some point, the pattern was supposedly renamed Turkey Tracks, giving the same distinctive shapes a much more harmless name.
The story appears in a number of later quilt-history sources, although the exact origin of the superstition is difficult to document. So whether you believe the old tale or simply enjoy the story, it has become part of the fascinating folklore surrounding this quilt pattern.
And there is an especially lovely historical connection: a Wandering Foot quilt from 1852 is documented in the history of the Oregon Trail. Made by Almedia Grimsley Morris during her family's journey west, the quilt is thought to have been pieced during the journey itself.
✨ A Little Heritage
Wandering Foot is a wonderful reminder that quilt patterns were not always fixed designs with one official name. Quilters adapted patterns, changed colours and construction, and often gave familiar designs new names as they travelled from one community to another.
