Descripción

The Carolina Lily is an old American quilt pattern dating back to the 19th century, and it belongs to the tradition of quilts that depict flowers and plants rather than relying purely on geometric shapes.

The block usually shows a tall flowering lily with leaves and a stem, often arranged against a light background. When several blocks are placed together, the lilies can appear as a whole garden growing across the quilt.

The name is generally associated with the Carolinas and the American South, although, as with many historic quilt patterns, there isn't one definitive inventor or a single documented moment when the design was created.

One of the fascinating things about Carolina Lily quilts is the huge variety of interpretation. Some antique versions are wonderfully primitive and wonky, while others use beautifully shaped appliqué to create very sophisticated flowers. Quilters could make each flower different simply by changing the fabric colours — meaning no two gardens needed to look alike.

And there's a lovely symbolism behind using flowers in quilts: flowers represented beauty, growth, home and the passing of seasons, making floral quilts especially meaningful as keepsakes and family heirlooms.

A little garden stitched into a quilt — and a wonderful example of how quilt blocks can tell a story without using a single word. 🌷
