Window View with Dimensional Curtains
Create a beautiful embroidered window scene that quite literally comes to life.
This unique design combines traditional embroidery with appliqué and dimensional fabric techniques to create realistic curtains that frame your chosen "view". The result is a project with remarkable depth and texture that's sure to become a conversation piece wherever it's displayed.
The centre window is created using appliqué, allowing you to personalise every project. Choose a simple blue fabric for a clear summer sky, a floral print for a garden view, or a novelty print featuring birds, wildlife, countryside scenes or seasonal landscapes. You can completely change the appearance of the finished design simply by changing the appliqué fabric—adding colour, interest and detail without increasing the stitch count.
Once the embroidery is complete, the dimensional curtains are added one side at a time, creating soft folds and natural drape that give the design its distinctive three-dimensional appearance. Finish the project with lace across the valance and ribbon tie-backs for an elegant finishing touch. The ribbons may be glued or hand sewn into place, depending on your preference.
This collection includes four sizes:
- 6" × 8"
- 7" × 9"
- 8" × 10"
- 9" × 11"
Whether displayed on cushions, wall hangings, quilts, tote bags or other home décor projects, this design offers endless opportunities to create something truly unique.
To guide you through every stage of the project, your purchase includes a comprehensive instruction booklet featuring detailed written instructions accompanied by clear step-by-step photographs. From preparing the appliqué window to constructing and attaching the dimensional curtains, every stage is carefully explained to help you achieve professional-looking results.
Although the embroidery itself is straightforward, the curtain construction requires careful folding and assembly. For this reason, this design is recommended for intermediate to advanced embroiderers, or adventurous beginners looking to learn a rewarding new technique.

Fabric Recommendations
For the most realistic curtain effect, choose a lightweight fabric that drapes naturally and forms soft, even folds.
Recommended fabrics include:
- Lightweight satin
- Cotton sateen
- Polyester lining fabric
- Lightweight quilting cotton
The sample shown was stitched using lightweight satin, whose subtle sheen beautifully catches the light and enhances the dimensional appearance of the curtains.
Avoid heavy fabrics such as denim, canvas or upholstery fabrics, as they can create bulky pleats and make the curtains more difficult to shape.
