SDS3475 Nutcracker Placemat

Set a festive Christmas table with this Nutcracker Placemat, a multi-hoop embroidery design that lets you stitch a placemat bigger than your hoop.

A proud nutcracker stands between two holly sprays with red berries, with a golden scroll border along the top and bottom and a holly sprig in every corner. The placemat is bigger than any home hoop, so we split it into smaller designs. You float the fabric on hooped stabilizer and stitch one design at a time, lining each one up with the printable templates we include. Then you add a sturdy backing and finish the edges with a flange binding on your sewing machine, which gives a neat binding with a thin strip of contrasting color beside it. It is not in-the-hoop, and there is no appliqué.

The design includes illustrated step-by-step instructions to guide you through every hooping, the trimming and the binding, making it a rewarding project for embroiderers who enjoy lining up designs.

What Is Floating?
Floating means the stabilizer goes in the hoop and the fabric lies on top of it, held with pins or tape outside the stitching area. The fabric is never clamped in the hoop, so you can move it for each new design without stretching it or leaving hoop marks.

Finished Size:
With the small corners: about 11" x 18½" (280 x 470 mm)
With the large corners: about 11" x 19¾" (280 x 502 mm)
You can also make your placemat a little smaller or larger by moving the designs in or out.

Hoop Sizes Required:
This design uses 4x4", 5x7", 6x8" and 7x10" hoops, and there are two ways to stitch the center:
7x10" route: the nutcracker and both holly sprays in one hooping (7 hoopings in total), plus a 6x8" hoop for the borders and a 4x4" hoop for the corners. Your 7x10" hoop needs a stitching area at least 162 mm wide.
5x7" route: the nutcracker and the holly sprays stitched one after the other (9 hoopings in total), plus a 6x8" hoop for the borders and a 4x4" hoop for the corners.
The corners come in two sizes. The small corners give the nutcracker room to breathe, and the large corners look fuller. The large corners are a tight fit in a 4x4" hoop, so use a 5x7" hoop if you prefer.

Two Colorways:
Stitch your nutcracker in Red or Blue from the same design files: simply follow the color chart for the one you choose. The scroll border is the same for both. You are welcome to try your own colors too.

Cutaway or tearaway stabilizer for hooping (one piece per hooping)
Heavyweight rigid cutaway stabilizer and backing fabric: 13" x 22" (33 x 56 cm) each
Fabric for the binding and the flange (⅛ yd / 15 cm of each)
Temporary spray adhesive
A water-erasable or air-erase fabric pen
