The football isn’t actually shaped like a “pigskin” — and it never really was.
Early footballs were made from inflated pig bladders, which gave them their nickname “pigskin.” However, since the late 1800s, manufacturers switched to cowhide leather, and the ball’s shape gradually evolved from round (like a soccer ball) to the pointed oval used today — designed to make forward passes easier and more aerodynamic.
