Beschreibung
A quilt block inspired by one of the oldest string games in the world.
Cat's Cradle is a pieced block of squares and triangles whose crossing lines recall the criss-cross pattern of string held between a child's fingers. Its contrasting pieces form a lattice that links neatly from block to block.
The string game itself is ancient and played all over the world. By the 19th century it was a familiar pastime in homes and schoolyards, and the Ladies Art Company sold a Cat's Cradle block among its mail-order patterns.
🧶 Did You Know?
Children's games were a favourite source of quilt names. Cat's Cradle sits alongside blocks such as Puss in the Corner, Leap Frog and Hopscotch. They remind us that quilts were made in busy family homes full of children and play.
🧵 A Little Heritage
A loop of string, a pair of hands and a game passed down for generations, now stitched into a block.
We've captured this design as Volume 5, Stamp 9, giving you another little piece of quilt history to add to your Heritage Quilt Society collection.
