Beschreibung
A puzzle of triangles with a name that makes every quilter smile.
The Old Maid's Puzzle is a pieced four-patch block made from half-square triangles and squares. Its light and dark pieces create a pattern of diagonal steps and points, and it looks more complicated than it really is.
The block was published by the Ladies Art Company, one of the first businesses to sell quilt patterns by mail order, in the late 19th century. Like many blocks of the time, it also went by other names in different publications.
🧩 Did You Know?
"Puzzle" blocks were a quilt-pattern fashion. The 19th century gave us Old Maid's Puzzle, Devil's Puzzle, Indian Puzzle and Lincoln's Platform Puzzle, among many others. The names reflected a love of games and parlour puzzles, and perhaps the head-scratching of fitting all those triangles together!
🧵 A Little Heritage
Quilters have always had a sense of humour, and blocks like this one show it.
We've captured this design as Volume 5, Stamp 6, giving you another little piece of quilt history to add to your Heritage Quilt Society collection.
