A humble name for a block that holds some of quilting's most personal history.
The Chimney Sweep block is built around a cross of squares set on point, with a plain centre and framing triangles. Its name is thought to come from the shape of the sweep's brushes, or from the soot-dark squares running through a light background.
The design dates from the 19th century, and the Ladies Art Company included a Chimney Sweep block among the patterns it sold by mail order in the late 1800s.
🧹 Did You Know?
Chimney Sweep was a favourite for signature quilts. That light centre strip was the perfect place to write or embroider a name. Friends, church groups and families made these blocks as keepsakes for a bride, a departing neighbour or a much-loved minister, and many signed Chimney Sweep quilts survive in museum collections today.
