Beschreibung
A quilt block named after a place of hope in one of the most widely read books ever written.
The Delectable Mountains is a striking pieced design built from rows of sharp sawtooth triangles that rise like a range of peaks around the centre. It is one of the older named patterns in American quiltmaking and was especially admired in the 19th century.
Its name comes from John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress (1678), where the Delectable Mountains are a peaceful resting place the pilgrims reach on their long journey — a place from which they can glimpse the Celestial City. In many homes, The Pilgrim's Progress sat on the shelf beside the family Bible, so the reference would have been instantly understood.
🏔️ Did You Know?
Quilt historians, including Ruth Finley in her 1929 book Old Patchwork Quilts and the Women Who Made Them, wrote about Delectable Mountains as a pattern that carried this spiritual meaning. For a quilter, it was a way of stitching a little hope and encouragement into an everyday bedcover.
🧵 A Little Heritage
There is something lovely about a block that began as a picture in a story. Those crisp triangles are all it takes to suggest a whole mountain range.
We've captured this design as Volume 5, Stamp 1, giving you another little piece of quilt history to add to your Heritage Quilt Society collection.
