Simple strips, endless movement — the Rail Fence is a classic example of how a very simple idea can create a striking quilt.

The Rail Fence is one of those wonderfully practical quilt patterns built from simple geometric pieces. Its long, narrow strips are arranged so that the finished design resembles the rails and slats of a wooden fence.

But there is an interesting twist to its history: “Rail Fence” doesn't refer to just one fixed block design. Quilt historians have documented several related arrangements and names, including Streak o' Lightning, Zig Zag, Snake-Fence and Dog's Tooth. The exact construction can vary considerably depending on the period and source.

One documented version was illustrated by Ruth Finley in her 1929 book Old Patchwork Quilts. Her Rail Fence was constructed entirely from triangles and was also associated with names including Streak o' Lightning and Zig Zag.

The beauty of Rail Fence isn't really in the individual block — it's in what happens when the blocks are repeated.

Depending on how the strips or triangles are arranged, the quilt can develop strong diagonal lines, zigzags or a woven-fence effect. A quilter could therefore take a very simple set of pieces and create a quilt with a surprisingly energetic overall pattern.

And that's something we see repeatedly in quilt history: the cleverness isn't always in complicated piecing. Sometimes it's simply in how ordinary shapes are placed next to one another.

🧵 A Little Heritage

There is something wonderfully appropriate about the Rail Fence for a collection celebrating quilting history.

Rail fences were an everyday part of rural American life, made from readily available timber and often built in distinctive zigzag arrangements. Whether or not a particular quiltmaker was consciously copying a real fence, the name perfectly captures the strong, repeating geometry of the pattern.

Like many traditional quilt designs, Rail Fence has travelled through generations with variations appearing under different names. The block may change, but the idea remains instantly recognizable.
