A Flower That Found Its Way Into Quilt History
Dogwood is one of those beautiful quilt designs inspired directly by nature. Dogwood blossoms have appeared in American quiltmaking in several different forms, from appliquéd floral quilts to geometric pieced designs.
One particularly important Dogwood quilt was Marie Webster’s “White Dogwood,” first published in the Ladies’ Home Journal in January 1912. Webster was one of the most influential American quilt designers of the early 20th century, and her floral designs helped bring a fresh, artistic style to quiltmaking. Her White Dogwood quilt used blocks set on point, with branches creating a lattice-like framework covered with delicate blossoms.
Dogwood appeared in other published quilt patterns too. The Kansas City Star published a “Dogwood Blossom” design in February 1934, using a very different geometric interpretation of the flower. This is a wonderful reminder that one flower could inspire completely different quilt designs depending on the era and the designer.
The Dogwood also appears among traditional nature-inspired quilt patterns documented by the National Park Service, alongside designs such as Sunflower, Dove in the Window and Bear Paw.

Marie Webster loved dogwood blossoms so much that she designed two different quilts featuring them! Her first, White Dogwood, appeared in 1912, and she returned to the flower about 15 years later for another design.
A LITTLE SYMBOLISM
Today, dogwood is often associated with beauty, renewal and the arrival of spring — a fitting inspiration for a quilt block that brings a delicate flowering branch into fabric and thread.
