The Pineapple block is one of the most recognisable and celebrated motifs in American quilting history.
The design emerged in the 19th century and quickly became associated with welcome, hospitality and friendship.
A Symbol of Welcome
The pineapple itself had a fascinating place in early American culture. In colonial America, pineapples were rare and extremely expensive, often brought across the ocean by sea captains as a luxury from distant tropical lands.
Displaying a pineapple in your home became a way of saying:
“You are special. You are welcome here.”
Quiltmakers embraced the pineapple as a beautiful way to express those same sentiments in fabric. Pineapple quilts were particularly suited to friendship quilts, guest rooms and quilts made for special occasions.
Why the Block Is So Interesting
Unlike many quilt blocks that rely on triangles or simple squares, the Pineapple block is built from successive strips arranged around a central shape. This creates its distinctive layered, radiating appearance.
The strong geometric structure also makes it a wonderful block for experimenting with colour, contrast, value and texture. Changing the placement of light and dark fabrics can make the pineapple appear dramatically different.
