Acorn and oak-leaf motifs have a long history in American quilting, particularly in appliqué quilts of the 19th century. Historical examples often combine stylised oak leaves with acorns in repeating arrangements, and the designs were especially popular during the Civil War era.
The acorn itself is a wonderful symbol. Because an enormous oak tree can grow from one tiny acorn, it has traditionally suggested strength, growth, potential and endurance—ideas that fit beautifully with the notion of quilts being made to last for generations.
Interestingly, antique oak-and-acorn quilts were often worked in strong reds and greens against white backgrounds, giving them a very distinctive 19th-century appearance.
