The Whig Rose is a beautiful 19th-century American quilt design featuring a large stylised rose surrounded by leaves, buds and curving stems. Examples of the pattern survive from around the 1840s onward, and both pieced and appliquéd versions were made.

The really interesting part is the name. The Whigs were an American political party formed in 1833–34, opposing the policies of President Andrew Jackson. The rose pattern became associated with the Whigs, and some historians believe the name may have been a quiet political statement stitched into a quilt.

But there's a wonderful historical twist: there is no surviving evidence that 19th-century quiltmakers actually called the design “Whig Rose.” The name appears to have become established later, with the first known published reference identified in Household Journal in 1912.

Even more intriguing, some quilts have been called Democrat Rose, and historical quilt researchers have debated whether different floral details were intended to distinguish the political designs.

The Whig Rose wasn't necessarily an easy appliqué design. Some antique examples that look appliquéd at first glance are actually made from many tiny pieced sections, including remarkably intricate pieced roses.
