The Storm at Sea is one of the most visually captivating designs in traditional quilting. Its clever arrangement of diamonds, triangles and squares creates the illusion of rolling waves and sweeping curves — yet every seam is completely straight!
The pattern has a fascinating, somewhat mysterious history. Early American examples date back to the late 19th century, with surviving quilts from around the 1870s. The design was later published widely, including by the Kansas City Star in 1932, helping establish it as a beloved American quilt pattern.
🌊 Did you know? The pattern has appeared under other names, including Lost Ship and Rocky Mountain. And because colour placement dramatically changes the appearance of the waves, two Storm at Sea quilts can look completely different while using exactly the same geometry.
