Courthouse Quilt Block History
The Courthouse quilt block, more accurately known as Courthouse Steps, is a close relative of the famous Log Cabin block. Like the Log Cabin, it is built by adding strips of fabric around a central square. However, instead of sewing strips in a continuous spiral, the Courthouse Steps block alternates strips on opposite sides, creating the appearance of broad steps leading toward a courthouse or other grand public building.
The block emerged during the mid-19th century, becoming especially popular in America after the Civil War. While its exact origin is unknown, many historians believe the name was inspired by the stately courthouses that stood at the centre of growing towns across the United States. The symmetrical "steps" reflected strength, order and stability—qualities associated with justice and civic life.
Unlike the Log Cabin, which traditionally used a red centre to represent the family hearth, the Courthouse Steps block is admired for its balanced, orderly design. Quilters often used light and dark fabrics on opposite sides to create striking visual contrast and depth.
Its simple construction made it an excellent block for using fabric scraps, while the finished quilts conveyed a sense of harmony and precision. Today, the Courthouse Steps remains one of the most beloved traditional quilt blocks, appreciated by both beginners and experienced quilters for its timeless elegance and endless colour possibilities.
