Fun Sport Fact:
Before baseballs had standardized stitching, players often made their own — and the direction of the stitches could affect how the ball curved in flight.
In the early days of baseball (mid-1800s), there was no set pattern or even size for the ball. Some pitchers learned to exploit the irregular stitches to make the ball move unpredictably — an early version of what we now call the “curveball,” long before it was officially recognized as a pitching technique.
