Did you know : Kangaroos are the only large animals that move by hopping as their main form of travel. Their powerful hind legs and elastic tendons act like springs, allowing them to cover up to 9 meters (30 feet) in a single leap! Baby kangaroos, called joeys, are born the size of a jellybean and crawl into their mother’s pouch, where they live and grow for several months. Even after they’re big, joeys often try to climb back in — sometimes with just their legs or tail sticking out, which looks hilarious. Kangaroos can’t move their legs independently when walking — they can only hop. When they need to move slowly, they use their strong tails as a “fifth leg”, shifting their body forward with a unique tail-assisted crawl that scientists only recently studied in detail.
